Lucca Restaurant News

Lucca restaurant opened April 1st, 2003. During the course of the last 5 years, it has been a pleasure and a privilege to be mentioned in many newspaper articles- as well as featured in more than a dozen news and television programs shown throughout the Sacramento area.

Recently, Lucca's received the distinguished award by the state of California to be chosen as the restaurant to represent and illuminate the California Fresh Campaign; highlighting the benefits of locally grown and sustainable agriculture and emphasizing the bounty of California's farmlands. Serving as a backdrop to the Governor's speeches in Japan, the lushly gardened courtyard presented a lovely promotion of our beautiful and culinary inclined state.

We look forward to seeing you at Lucca,

Style-amento
Jay Cohen

My 1975 American Heritage Dictionary (Bar Mitzvah gift... damn I'm old) and found sixteen common uses for the word “style”. From those many definitions, one most directly to my semi-stylish brain: “A quality of imagination and individually expressed in ones actions and tastes.”

This definition supports the premise that you don't purchase style. You LIVE style through your openness to new experiences and by expressing yourself with a confidence in your own creativity, not by being In Style by following other peoples lead.

Looking around the Sacto dining scene lately, I'm thrilled to see restaurants giving us the opportunity to add style to our lives by providing us really exciting alternatives to the ordinary dining experience. There are some folks who are truly diverting from the flock and following their imagination to our reward.

When people talk about the 'energy' of Vancouver, Chicago, New York, San Francisco etc., I think they are identifying the excitement we get to experience when creative entrepreneurs collect in cities and express their heart and souls upon the cosmopolitan palate. That genesis is happening now in Sacramento and we all get to buy new shoes and enjoy the party.

Lucca is located at 1615 J Street and for my nickel is the most stylish space in the city. The owners are wonderful and the servers confirm they dig working here by being friendly and helpful, not programmed robots bugging you with questions like “Can I start you off with one of three appetizers I am under pressure to sell you”. The space has daring art, beautiful glass light fixtures, jaw-droppingly gargantuan mirrors in the back half of the restaurant, and a lively buzz that is fun without being overbearing.

What I find really hot about Lucca is that on Saturday night you can show up around 11:30 p.m. and order from a full menu while listening to a DJ showcase their artistry with music that is very creative without bombarding your senses. Most places that attempt this scene create an environment that you cant carry a conversation. At Lucca, you can enjoy the music and still have a dining experience with conversation. The food is yummy and the wine list is sanely-price as god intended. (Other restaurants, please get the clue!)
